Women’s Wine & Dine Wisdom 2007’s Wine Tip of The Month
Gewurtztra…what? Gewürztraminer.
O.k. that’s fine but what is it?
a) The German equivalent to “God Bless You”
b) A new high powered motor vehicle as in “that’s some snazzy Gewürztraminer you’re driving there.”
c) A spicy type of sausage
d) None of the above.
If you guessed d, you are correct. If you guessed c you were close. Gewürztraminer (which in German means spicy grape) or gewurtz as those in the know like to call it, is a spicy grape varietal, and a noble one at that. Though it is definitely not as common as everyday Chardonnay (here), Gewurtz in November is a grape you should familiarize yourself with if you haven’t already and there’s good reason to.
Aside from being fun to pronounce Gewurtz has the distinction of being one of the great “Turkey Day” wines.
Think about it when you look at all the flavors combining on the average Thanksgiving table, what ONE wine can effortlessly blend with all of them? Not many.
Gewurtz however can give it one heck of a try. Here’s why; very simply the flavor profile of the grape is a unique combination of fruity, spicy and somewhat, depending on the style can be a tad on the sweeter side. That means it goes with the actual protein AND the sweet potato pie, not to mention the oyster dressing and all the other fixings.
If you’ve not tried one, no time like the present, Wine Cellars of Annapolis has a great selection.
Happy Thanksgiving and here’s to you and your family’s good health!
