Screw caps are anything but a screw up...

wine wisdom

Screw caps the aluminum bottle closings meant to replace traditional cork are a real wild card for people. To date, a natural assumption of most people has been to associate a screw cap with inferior wine. Understandable as for years, the bulk of bottles sealed with screw caps were mass produced cheap wines that were passable at best and at worst, not worth drinking. Dutifully we=92ve learned, screw cap equals BAD. Cork equals Good. After all, you=92ll never see a waitperson in a fine restaurant unscrew a bottle of wine in front of a diner and present him with the screw cap, or will you? These days, you just might.

The tides are turning when it comes to screw caps and it=92s all due to a nasty little critter called 2,4,6- Trichloranisole (TCA). Today, prominent wineries such as Bonny Doon, Plumpjack and many more are making the full out transition to screw caps. With good reason. They protect against corked wines, are easier to open, and also, perfect for consumers wanting to easily reseal a bottle to save leftover wine for future consumption. Look for some premium screwcaps at your favorite wine store today! Our affiliates, Wine Cellars of Annapolis, Four Corners Wine & Spirits (Phoenix, MD), Spirits of Mt Vernnon (Baltimore City), Absolutely Wine & Spirits (Columbia, MD) and Collier's of Centreville (Wilmington, DE) all have phenomenal selection.

Please note, from May 25th until June 9th inclusive, M will be in Europe scouting locations for upcoming GrapeWomen trips and touring wineries in Champagne, France and and with a group in Tuscany, Italy. If you require any immediate assitance, please contact Keyara by either emailing her at keyara@womenandwineevents.com or calling the office at 410-746-3469.

As always we try to keep this short, but there's just so much grape stuff (pun intended) and other things to tell 'ya. And remember if it looks kinda like the WW&D but doesn't say it's the WW&D - it's not the WW&D. There are more than one women-only wine event and we know a few of you have been confused. Often imitated but never replicated, help us help others - come wine and dine with us soon!

Until next time, cheers and remember "don't drink & drive!"Best, M
